2 Artists to watch @thisizGrizzly @vasmusic http://disastronaut.posterous.com/audio-sushi-new-artists-of-the-year-ones-to-w

Audio Sushi New Artists of the Year / Ones to Watch 2013 @ThisIzGRizzly @vasmusic interview @disastronaut

Diptic

Audio Sushi New Artists of the Year

Ones to Watch 2013 - V.A.S. & Grizzly [UK]

2 Artists of the year that i could not recommend higher - Up to a point about a week ago when someone handed me a CDR of Space Invaders
by V.A.S., Grizzly was by far the most exciting young artist I had come across, put on in 2012. Check the links below for videos, mixtapes and links - as there is alot there to browse. And hope you are having an amazing holidays - and here's to an exciting 2013.
- Jeffrey

Joint Interview by @Disastronaut

to Grizzly firstly, tell me whats going on? You've had a breakthrough year but it seems like 2013 is looking like the year you'll come through to wider recognition. When you played the Dogstar - it was unbelievable. I'm not sure i've ever seen anyone take the mic and dominate the place like you did last night. There is power there. Where does that come from. You're a giant also :) like Notorious - coming up in the streets of South London - discuss.

Whats good man,  You know I am constantly working on something new. Well this year has been good for more in the 2nd half. I just released my new EP Back On My Grime and Video to a track from it called "Fight Club" and earlier in June I dropped #2012 mixtape which you know had several videos. 2013 is gonna be about collabs and working on Album material.  Hopefully drop the album then too on itunes.

Lol you know what Dogstar was crazy because that was the 1st live show or performance should i say in almost 3 years.  I have been releasing so much music is 2010 and not performed. Boy.. My size and beard make me Grizzly.. boy musics and a lot of my persona and music comes  from growing up on the streets of Brixton and experiences I been through makes me the way I am as an artist. I been through a lot people dont know about . And through my music and performance i try to bring my story pain.

to V.A.S. I received a cdr recently from a long term Audio Sushi raver and friend - thanks Mel! - and it turned out to be you. It rocked the house on first play - thats very rare. Space Invaders. wicked track. But then I started going through all of your videos, your remakes, verses and covers and realised there is something much more here than a one-off grime arcade game song guy --- where did you come from? what are you up to? and why Space invaders?

V.A.S.  Haha thanks man. Yeah Im not only a rapper, I sing and also produce. I produced space invader. I think I came from space and just landed here a few years back. Home planet, Jupiter. haha. Well I started by recording songs in my room just to pass the time in the summer. With poetry in my mind after GCSE’s I wrote poems and mixed them with music really. It became such a big passion that I started to take it seriously roughly three years ago. I’ve always wanted to be a performer but when I started it properly a few years ago I wasn't doing enough with it. Uni does take a big chunk of time, but education is always worth it. No matter what we all love to learn in some way or another. J And now… I’m taking it really seriously and excited to perform and get out there!

What I’m up to is expressing my thoughts, spreading positivity, and looking to do what I love and connect with people around the world. Let people know you can have fun and everyone will have fun with you. And I just honestly have a strong passion for music and would like to share that with the world. It all comes from the heart… all of it!

Space Invader… Came about because sometimes when you have something in your head and you can’t get it out, it invades space when you're trying to do something or remember it. Everyone can relate to that. Whether it’s a bad thing or a good thing, it still happens to us all. Ever think you were going to say something and then you cant because something you love or hate is in your mind at that specific moment instead? haha. And a lot of people will dislike you as well as love what you do and be in their mind for it. It relates to everything from relationships to doing coursework… also whilst listening to the instrumental I produced for it, I was writing it walking up a hill to Uni, and a nintendo DS was in my pocket so… space invader seemed a great fit… games… everyone loves games lol

As young artists - the feature that both of you do so well is social media and videos, production. You both make videos and put out tracks like you're in a hurry - on that front - tell me about your creative process and what advice you have for other artists trying to break through. What are your inspirations -and in the spirit of things - can you also recommend an artist to watch in 2013?

GRIZZLY : Its all down to the beat when I write music. I change my mind alot aswell I may start writing something in one beat the next day not like beat or the way I may have written the hook and find a whole new beat and fit it to that with a whole new melody. When it comes to videos alot of the time I leave the creativity side to the director unless i had a vision from when I wrote the track. To all the young artists I would say just be yourself and dont think anybody owes you anything. Find your lane stick to it and greatness will come. I am still trying and have not seen my greatness yet but I can feel it coming soon. My main inspirations are 50 cent Big Narstie Bob Marley Notorious BIG and 2Pac. I feel the pain and the message when I listen to their music. But yeah, just try to be original. Artists to watch out for in 2013 iz a tough one cos there are so many now but I would say Terra Kid @ItsTerraOnline he has been going in for long but he started makin big steps now.. I've seen him grown from a young age.

-----

V.A.S. Haha appreciate that. It may seem as I’m in a hurry but I don't feel I am. I ALWAYS have something to say I guess, but theres still quite a lot that wont see the light of day. Thats because I like to release things that Im happy with and I don't like rushing as I like perfecting my art. I do like to try new things so I release them also and see if people appreciate me having fun doing what I love on a track.

Sometimes I start with poetry with the love songs, because that’s how I started getting into songwriting. I sort of jot down verses anywhere I am, and when I get to the studio record them straight from the heart, no matter the subject Im talking about. I guess it’s my passion that drives me so it comes out well and fluently. However I do like to breathe but at the start of my career, I only dropped ONE video a year, and I realised I wasn't doing enough in the studio because thats where I feel at home. I should ALWAYS be there. haha

Any time I can, I get into the studio and get recording, not all comes out but it makes me happy just doing it and watching the influence it has on people. I like making a positive difference.

Trying to break through is hard, the best advice anyone can take doing anything they love is not give up. Because as you're giving up you could be at your closest in getting where you want to be. And also success is what you believe it to be. It doesn't have to be 20 cars, 10 chains and 50 girls in your videos. Don't get blinded and do it for the right reasons, not the wrong ones.

My biggest inspiration life itself. Live it. Love it. Because it’s precious!

Finally  2013. What can we expect? Please include download links, videos, site links - anything you'd like!

GRIZZLY:

More music and videos. Hopefully an Album as I said before but yeah man just positive vibes and more importantly more hard work.

Grandmaster Flash, is an American hip hop musician and DJ—one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing.

He has been credited with the invention of the first crossfader by sourcing parts from a junkyard in the Bronx. It was initially an On/Off toggle switch from an old microphone that he transformed into a left/right switch which allowed him to switch from one turntable to another, thereby avoiding a break in the music.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first hip hop/rap artists to be so honored.

#Brixton Party Alert This Friday @dogstarbrixton @dannyrampling + Ilona inc play @choicecuts1 http://www.facebook.com/DogstarBrixton#!/events/526586507361159/

http://www.facebook.com/DogstarBrixton#!/events/526586507361159/

Perhaps the worst kept secret in South London clubbing for some time - we had to keep the lid on this until after the massive Shoom 25th anniversary parties - Now we are able to announce officially that the DJ Author House Pioneer DANNY RAMPLING and equally talented partner and soon to be Mrs. Rampling -ILONA INC - will be joining us this Friday for an exclusive back to back set. This isn't old or old skool [Our original idea was "old skool knees up" - but instead - we must stress - Rampling and Ilona will ...play what they want and how they want it - and is as on point as ever!] The Old skool idea was more about the Dogstar in the Brixton context and our 17 years of history... Also its free before 11pm with Danny And Ilona going on likely just after midnight. Like Danny's page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/DANNY-RAMPLING/59137992850?ref=stream

Audio Sushi Track of the Year Hot Natured & Ali Love - Benediction - Hot Creations http://youtu.be/PXx1CLAJ-OA @mralilove

no. 4 is Natured & Ali Love - Benediction  - Hot Creations

sublime track... Ali + Hot Natured has never sounded better...

Purchase NOW on iTunes: http://smarturl.it/benediction

Hot Natured and Ali Love are set to release one of the most highly anticipated singles of the year, 'Benediction' on 29th October through Hot Creations.

Hot Natured's last single 'Forward Motion' was the seductive summer anthem of 2011. Since then the founding members of Hot Natured, Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, have been joined by Ali Love and Luca C (from the duo Infinity Ink). The quartet has been locked away in writing sessions in Los Angeles, London and Ibiza, with an album planned for spring 2013.

'Benediction' is the first track to emerge from this album but its seeds were first sewn almost 10 year ago when Ali first thought of the main chords and concept. Today that idea has germinated into Hot Natured's lead single. It features vocalist Ali Love's trademark smooth and infectious tones, driven by melodic keys and that trademark deep, haunting bounce. 'Benediction' showcases Hot Natured's collective song writing and top-of-their-game production skills to full, potent effect.

First heard on Jamie and Seth Troxler's recent takeover for Pete Tong on Radio 1 and played at Hot Creations' night Paradise at DC10 in Ibiza all summer, 'Benediction' is an irresistible and infectious crossover hit. It demonstrates exactly why Hot Natured and their Hot Creations label have become the go-to names for unrivalled disco-tinged, addictive house music with 'quality' stamped all over it. Also featured here are a blowout dub of 'Benediction' and a stupendous remix of 'Forward Motion by MK... what a package!!

AUDIO SUSHI REMIX OF THE YEAR

Kidnap Kid - "Vehl" (Jonty Skrufff No Mercy Remix)

below is a free download link to the mix:
https://soundcloud.com/black-butter-records/kidnap-kid-vehl-jonty-skrufff?in=black-butter-records/sets/kidnap-kid-alphaville-ep-2

To kick off my 2012 roundup - my favourite remix and a short interview with Jonty about how it came about, what he's up to in 2013
and Black Butter Records, Kidnap Kid. Jonty's answers are italicised.  Please See Jonty's blog [and place to sign up for his every friday
on point newsletter] here:   http://skrufff.com or for email only http://www.mailermailer.com/x?oid=1006269b

Short interview with Jonty
------=--
You've said you selected this track randomly from a folder of unknown promos?
Can you tell me a bit more about that serendipity - was it? or was it
fate? - im interested also in what you heard in the original that made
you take on this remix?

/...”It was pure serendipity, which has long been one of my favourite words (a line I’ve taken from wonderful American blues singer Bonnie Raitt, who I interviewed a few times in the 90s and blew me away. A truly magical inspirational person. Which brings me to Vehl- on one listen I loved it- the French vocal, the wonderful melody- it touched me.

So I immediately wanted to play it in my DJ sets and planned to drop it the next weekend at a big gig I had in Moscow (Arma 17). I was chatting to some Russian friends about the track before the gig but when I was actually playing my set  I realised its beats were just too broken up to fit with the club’s vibe that night,

Taking a step  back, after discovering the original and giving it five out of five I started corresponding with Black Butter and it turned out that the label boss was a long term reader and fan of Skrufff who had been sending me tracks under different projects for years- this was the first one I reacted to (serendipity striking again). I then asked him for the French vocal to use as an acapella and several conversations later, the remix idea emerged.

next - you call it the no mercy remix. knowing you - that was
surprising - as you're exactly opposite that in my mind... but was it
no mercy for boring djs/ boring clubs? boring people? edm?
its no secret each week in your blog you are having an open argument
with what you think are the false prophets and the charlatans -
pushing play once in the sets and
then posing like jesus on over sized arena stages... [i might rewrite
that - but asking what are you on about! :)]

“The ‘no mercy’ was a play on Kidnap Kid’s name and is really intended as a joke- I just like the phrase. As for club culture, I find this EDM world interesting as an outsider looking in but it doesn’t make me angry- and I must say I’m loving Berlin’s club scene right now- going out is so much fun and for me personally it’s been a fantastic year for music.

/...

the track is out on BB - they've had an incredible year - firstly tell
me about Kidnap
and secondly the label - why are they going so right - almost every
track i've heard from them this year - especially in south london -
rocks the spot

Olly from Black Butter is a magical guy- really- he’s in tune with his intuition and going for it. And Kidnap Kid similarly is a genuine raw talent who’s doing his own thing.

/...

i know you've been working hard on other tracks, remixes and originals
- which might surprise some people reading this - as they know you
from your journalism and on point newsletter and blog. you also
entered the dj life too - with astonishing success - so what i wanted
to ask - was where is this going? and what's your vision?

To quote chantelle- I’m living the dream- kind of. I write about what I’m passionate about and I play music as a DJ I love- no fillers. The best things have always come when I’ve been bold and taken giant steps into the unknown (taking up writing, DJing, making music, the radio show, moving to New York, moving to Berlin)- Leaps of faith and (another cliché) seizing the day have always rewarded me.”

/...

finally, as a remixer - you're always looking out for amazing tracks - so who's exciting you
for 2013?

I follow labels more than individuals these days and am merciless in dropping labels the moment they go off the boil. For tunes I love, check out the radio shows here- each week we play at least 7 brand new tunes: http://www.mixcloud.com/jontyskrufff/

NOW ON SALE GRANDMASTER FLASH @dogstarbrixton http://www.wegottickets.com/event/198912

Friday 25th January 2013 DOGSTAR BRIXTON

WIKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_Flash

Joseph Saddler (born January 1, 1958 in Bridgetown, Barbados), better known as Grandmaster Flash, is an American hip hop musician and DJ—one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing.

He has been credited with the invention of the first crossfader by sourcing parts from a junkyard in the Bronx.[by whom?] It was initially an On/Off toggle switch from an old microphone that he transformed into a left/right switch which allowed him to switch from one turntable to another, thereby avoiding a break in the music.[citation needed]

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first hip hop/rap artists to be so honored.[1]

[edit] Biography

Joseph Saddler's family migrated to the United States from Barbados, in the Caribbean, and he grew up in The Bronx, New York. He attended Samuel Gompers High School, a public vocational school, where he learned how to repair electronic equipment.[2] Saddler's parents played an important role in his interest in music. His parents came from Barbados and his father was a big fan of Caribbean and black American records. As a child, Saddler was fascinated by his father's record collection. In an interview, he reflected: "My father was a very heavy record collector. He still thinks that he has the stronger collection. I used to open his closets and just watch all the records he had. I used to get into trouble for touching his records, but I'd go right back and bother them."[3] Saddler's early interest in DJing came from this fascination with his father's record collection as well as his mother's desire for him to educate himself in electronics.[4] After high school, he became involved in the earliest New York DJ scene, attending parties set up by early luminaries.

He is also a nephew to the late Former Feather Weight Champion of the World Sandy Saddler.[5]

[edit] Innovations

Grandmaster Flash carefully studied the DJing styles and techniques of earlier DJs, particularly Pete Jones, Kool Herc, and Grandmaster Flowers.[6] As a teenager, he began experimenting with DJ gear in his bedroom, eventually developing and mastering three innovations that are still considered standard DJing techniques today.

  • Backspin Technique ("Quick-Mix Theory") a.k.a. Early New York party DJs came to understand that short drum breaks were popular with party audiences. Aiming to isolate these breaks and extend them for longer durations, Grandmaster Flash learned that by using duplicate copies of the same record, he could play the break on one record while searching for the same fragment of music on the other (using his headphones). When the break finished on one turntable, he used his mixer to switch quickly to the other turntable, where the same beat was queued up and ready to play. Using the backspin technique, the same short phrase of music could be looped indefinitely.
  • Punch Phrasing ("Clock Theory"): This technique involved isolating very short segments of music, typically horn hits, and rhythmically punching them over the sustained beat using the mixer.
  • Scratching: Although the invention of record scratching is generally credited to Grand Wizzard Theodore, Grandmaster Flash perfected the technique and brought it to new audiences. Scratching, along with punch phrasing, exhibited a unique performative aspect of party DJing: instead of passively spinning records, he manipulated them to create new music.[7]

[edit] Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

Grandmaster Flash played parties and collaborated with rappers such as Kurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski. In the mid 1970s, he formed his own group. The original lineup consisted of Cowboy (Keith Wiggins), Melle Mel (Melvin Glover) and Kid Creole (AKA Kidd Creole/Nathaniel Glover), and the ensemble went by the name "Grandmaster Flash & the 3 MCs". Two other rappers briefly joined, but they were replaced more permanently by Rahiem (Guy Todd Williams, previously in the Funky Four) and Scorpio (Eddie Morris, a.k.a. Mr. Ness) to make Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Quickly gaining recognition for their skillful raps, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five pioneered MCing and freestyle battles. Some of the staple phrases in MCing have their origins in the early shows and recordings of the group. In 1977, the new group began performing regularly at Disco Fever in the Bronx, one of the first times a hip-hop group was given a weekly gig at a well-known venue.[8] In fact, it is claimed that Cowboy created the term "Hip hop" while teasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers.[9]

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were signed to Bobby Robinson's Enjoy Records and in 1979 released their first single, "Superrappin'." The following year they signed to Sugar Hill Records and began touring and releasing numerous singles. The seminal "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel", released in 1981, is a 7-minute solo showcase of Grandmaster Flash's virtuosic turntable skills, combining elements of Blondie's "Rapture," Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache," Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," Chic's "Good Times," and the group's own "Freedom." It is also the first documented appearance of record scratching on a record. That year, the group opened for The Clash and were poorly received by an audience unaccustomed to the new style.[10] The group's most significant hit was "The Message" (1982), which was produced by in-house Sugar Hill producer Clifton "Jiggs" Chase and featured session musician Duke Bootee. Unlike earlier rap tunes, "The Message" featured a grim narrative about inner city violence, drugs, and poverty. In 2002, its first year of archival, it was one of 50 recordings chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry, the first hip hop recording ever to receive this honor. Critics praised the song's social awareness, calling the chorus "a slow chant seething with desperation and fury."[11] Other than Melle Mel, however, no members of the group actually appear in the song. Rahiem lip-synced Duke Bootee's vocal in the music video. The same year, Grandmaster Flash appeared in the movie "Wild Style" and sued Sugar Hill over the non-payment of royalties. Tensions mounted as "The Message" gained in popularity, eventually leading to a rupture between Melle Mel and Grandmaster Flash. Soon the group disintegrated entirely. Grandmaster Flash, Kid Creole, and Rahiem left Sugar Hill, signed with Elektra Records, and continued on as simply "Grandmaster Flash", while Melle Mel and the others continued on as "Grandmaster Melle Mel & the Furious Five".

Although frequently credited on the records, Grandmaster Flash doesn't actually appear on "The Message," "Freedom," or many of the other Furious Five songs.[7] Although Grandmaster Flash provided the central element of the group's sound when performing live (in addition to giving the group its name), there was little room for his turntablism in early singles driven by the grooves of live session musicians. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five reformed in 1987 for a charity concert, and in 1988 they released a new album. The group reunited again in 1994, although Cowboy died in 1989.

Today, Grandmaster Flash is the owner of a clothing line, "G.Phyre."[12] In 2008 he released a memoir, The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats.[13] He hosts a weekly show on Sirius Satellite Radio (Friday Night Fire with Grandmaster Flash)[14] and was presented with the BET "I Am Hip Hop Icon" award in 2006.[15]

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the first hip-hop/rap group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 12, 2007 by Jay-Z.[16] In 2008, he remixed the single "Into the Galaxy" by the Australian group, Midnight Juggernauts.[17]

It has been said that "his pioneering mixing skills transformed the turntable into a true 'instrument', and his ability to get a crowd moving has made his DJ sets legendary." [18]

Grandmaster Flash appears in the video game DJ Hero as a playable character along with original mixes created for the game.[19]

On his last album, The Bridge, appears the Spanish hip hop group Violadores del Verso.

Grandmaster Flash is currently working on his 12th album, set for release this spring.[20]
