back at the forefront of Brixton life

December 01 2007

Gig/Club Audiosushi Winter Ball

Having weathered the suicide of their singer, name changes, arguments, labels going bankrupt, acid house and gun toting gangsters, the good ship New Order finally hit the rocks earlier this year when Peter Hook, the band’s iconic bass player decided he could no longer bare to be in the same room as the other two and announced the band’s demise. Having spent 30 years hunched over his bass in 2 of the most influential British bands of the late twentieth century he could have been forgiven for hanging up the leather chaps and retiring to the countryside to raise trout. Obviously though, the sedentary life doesn’t hold too much appeal as this Saturday as he’s playing some of his favourite records at The Dogstar in Brixton alongside the likes of rising flouro popstars The RGBs, Sonic Mook’s Sean Mclusky and Audiosushi host Disastronaut – about as far from a quiet life as it’s possible to imagine. With the venue itself all tarted up and back at the forefront of Brixton life this is a good chance to catch two venerable musical institutions enjoying a second lease of life. / John Power

Opinion: Zavvi.co.uk? We think its going to be a bit of a Fopp.

The signs are not good. Green and Lime and an internet URL cobbled onto it [which one could
deduce meant that Savvy, Savi, Saavvy and Even Zavvi.com ? were already taken?] – The zavvi.co.uk signs have been rolled out onto the high streets in the last few weeks, but in the mother of all cock-ups the Virgin Megastore yellow/black branding is still lingering around - and apparently will remain around as the Virgin Phones and Media concessions remain trading from the new zavvi.co.uk premises. And it gets a little more confusing when you consider the Irish stores with the uk suffix?- .co.uk? Not Savvy.

And with retailers under the most pressure being the ones owned by private equity [ Yes we know that zavvi.co.uk is a a MBO management buyout by by existing Virgin Megastores MD Simon Douglas and finance director Steve Peckham ] being the most under pressure this festive season [New Look, Pets at Home, not to forget Foop and Music Zone which have gone into administration - and Choices UK - the DVD rental company, failing to find a buyer..] zavvi.co.uk seems like it is already going wrong. And on top of that even the WEBSITE - which is the name of the 125 or so stores isn't ready. It will be in January - but really - it should be done now and opening without it is a crucial error.

The creative execution Cathy Kebbeh mentions in the below Creativematch interview - seems non existentEven 'non-corporate' identities [with 2 employees] have working websites. And if they were clever about the retail spaces they had - the signs and branding - would be the last consideration. What the main question is: "Why do you exist?" Currently, there is no reason to go into a zavvi / Virgin Megastore - like the Oxford st. Anchor - as HMV just a short
skip down the street does it infinitely better. And does vinyl as well as a specialist - with better instores, and ontop of that - the partnership with West country music gear sellers Sound Control in the basement of the Oxford St. store - never really worked out?

On visits to three of their stores yesterday there was no obvious signs, forgive the pun, except for thesign outside. And for a moment, when seeing it for the first time, the sign was wrong. If i had to guess the sector- it would be Food possibly, or an organic frozen yogurt stand... it has resonances of the M&S colour scheme and the tacky URL in the name that Schooldisco.com has - but it says absolutely nothing about music retailing.

When the re-branding of the Virgin Megastores was being formulated I'm sure they looked at the designs for Reading Festival - the colours, the fonts, the typography, everything. Because the Carling Reading Festival to use its completely commerical name - screams music, screams bands, screams to the kids who actually go to record stores.

Now unlike Rough Trade and to some extent Phonica records, who have found a glorious future in the niche areas- with absolutely focused stocks, digital arms that are interesting and a point to exist - zavvi.co.uk right now is just a sign change. A very expensive sign change. The Internet site isn't ready, the stores aren't changing - really, the Live & Breath [see http://www.creativematch.co.uk/viewNews/?95006] entire re brand is starting too look
very confused. And on top of it - in this massively difficult music retailing environment - you have to ask yourself- who is going to bail out zavvi.co.uk this year now that the charismatic Billionaire has sold ?

For physical media retailers like zavvi.co.uk 2008 is set to be a disaster. zavvi.co.uk is set to be the biggest music retail story of 2008 for all the wrong reasons. There is the wall. Seems like they're already up against it.

*IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

Press Release: "Peace activist faces prison for remembering war dead"

Contact Maya Anne Evans: 07980 748 555 or JNV 0845 458 9571

In the week of remembrance Sunday, peace activists Maya Anne Evans (27)
from St Leonards on Sea, convicted in 2005 for reading the names of
British soldiers killed in the Iraq war opposite Downing Street is now
facing prison for her remembrance ceremony when she attends Horseferry
Road Court 2pm Tuesday to explain why she is refusing to pay the £250
fine.

As the British Legion assemble this Sunday to remember the war dead,
Maya Anne Evans (1) may well be spending a week in prison for reading
the
names of Iraqi's and British soldiers killed since the invasion 2003
when she stood opposite the cenotaph two years ago.

An unauthorised vigil will be held at 1pm outside the court on Tuesday,
and a remembrance ceremony will take place at 1.30pm where activists
will remember the 1.2 million Iraqi's and 171 British service people who
have died as a result of the war, according to the law this event is
classified illegal.

Maya Anne Evans says: "This Thursday will be the third anniversary of
the bombing of Fallujah where US troops with the support of the UK
bombed
the city using white phosphorus – a substance that burns down to the
bone – as a weapon. A reported 700 bodies were recovered from the
rumble, 550 were women and children. I feel it is important to protest
against this kind of thing happening again.

In my heart I can’t help feeling that paying the fine would be an
acceptance of my
“guilty” conviction. It's time to stand up and say we are unwilling to
accept what has happened in Iraq and unwilling to accept more war."

Fellow peace activist, Milan Rai also with Justice not Vengeance, whom
Evans was arrested with in 2005 served a prison earlier this year after
refusing to pay the fine for organising the unauthorised demonstration.

Rai said: "I could not co-operate with the erosion of civil liberties by
paying the fine, therefore I was imprisoned."

TRAFALGAR - "NO ORDER' EP - OUT MON 15TH OCT

TRAFALGAR - DEBUT EP
RELEASED ON 1234 RECORDS ON MON 15TH OF OCTOBER
on 12² vinyl and available to download.
From all good record shops and I Tunes

A1. NO ORDER
A2. SEDUCE AND DESTROY
B1. NO ORDER (ACCELERATED YOUTH¹S ETON MESS REMIX)
B2. NO ORDER (DISASTRONAUT REMIX)

TRAFALGAR
Delivering a devastating double-shotted raking broadside, the NO ORDER E.P.
is the debut release from London based now-wave outfit TRAFALGAR.

Once every decade a band explodes on to the scene, incandescent, kicking and
screaming in the tantrum of youth. Trafalgar: terrifying teenagers intent on
burning down your cabin and plundering your wives and lovers; England
expects that every man will do his duty.

A bayonet to rock and roll convention; they don¹t like it up Å’em. A ragged
line heading to oblivion, swaying upon the choppiest of seas. The column is
led by the impassioned Sam Voltage on vocals, sured up by Viscount Luc Emile
Egret on guitar, with Vice Admiral Flash Louis Bhose on bass and Bombardier
Stoker on the battery completes TRAFALGAR¹s formidable troop.

This is a band that thinks about the world then forgets about it. The Å’No
Order¹ E.P sees them rattling like a pair of loaded atomic dice through 3
minute filthy rock anthems, followed by a foaming furious farrago of
electronic remixes for the dancefloor. Hate them or hug, them you cant
ignore them.

Produced by Robert Å’Kiss Me¹ Harder and Å’one-eyed¹ Liquid Anderson and
Å’Angry¹ Mclusky, the Å’No Order¹ EP is released on 12² vinyl and available to
download.

FREE MAXIMO PARK AFTERSHOW

SKull Juice / Cut up and Dance

Holy mother of pearl! It's...

Cut Up And Dance

After a summer sabbatical the Cut Up boys Magic Jase and Mike Oman
return, this time for some southside action at Brixton's infamous
late-night disco boozer The Dogstar. Guests tonight are our own
fresh-faced answer to Belgium's 2ManyDJs, SKULL JUICE. These young
tirks have been impressing everybody with their super-dope,
what-the-funk-was-that! DJ sets everywhere from Bugged Out! and Modular
to Adventures In The Beetroot Field and Jase's own Nodisko party. Don't
believe us? Check out their ace mixes online at
http://feeds.feedburner.com/SkullJuiceRadio.

Cut Up And Dance is the twisted brain-wrong of ex-Carbon Music men Mike
Oman and Magic Jase. Residents/promoters of the Together and Nodisko
parties respectively, Mike 'n' Jase have teamed up to present their
very own Saturday-night social where they take electro, party mash-ups,
disco-rock, forgotten unclassics, blog-house and bass and give them a
right royal shoeing.

You dancin'? 'Cause they're askin'...

Audiosushi News

Verdict: Touchscreen Ipod [released in UK on November 9th, 2007]
[include link]
Audiosushi has had a special sneak preview of the new Apple touch screen Ipod including a chance to speak to Apple's CEO
Steve Jobs.
Audiosushi went to the launch the new touch screen IPod at the Apple store on Regent's Street to see him and the best thing to
come out of Apple in years.
First, the Ipod. One word: Brilliant. A touch screen, gorgeously black, graphics heavy, sleek and very intuitive to use - what's not to
like about it? Only two things to complain about - its not on sale now. And the Iphone which is basically the same thing - will be
tied to O2. Also by the time it reaches these shores, some of the early software problems will also be sorted out - so we predict
another massive Apple hit - just in time for the holidays... see the Apple website for more details... Also as a byproduct - another
one of our favorites, the 80gb Video Ipod, is now a shocking £159!
Verdict: 4 stars

7 PJ Harvey "White Chalk lp" The magic woman from the west returns - sparse, elegant beautiful mostly piano ballads
8 Never Heard of Zepplin "Is in Business" [Metal Postcard] one man, one keyboard vs. the world - 8 bit armageddon

"Renegade" Audiosushi DJ Disastronaut in Time Out Feature on Future Trends in Music
[include link]
Time Out London has met with Audiosushi to discuss the future of music, blogging and new trends in nightlife....
Audiosushi's co-founder Jeffrey has been featured in a major full-page article in London's Time Out - read the whole story here!

Review: Bungalow 8 [opening]
Audiosushi played the Wallpaper* Party during fashion week at London's new Bungalow 8 club - this is what we thought!
Bungalow 8 is an elegant space, set over two floors, just off St. Martin's Lane. Like its namesake in New York City, Amy Succo's London venture - has involved some of the leading players in London's nightlife and has almost instantly taken the highest of the high ground with just the flick of a Crocodile Birkin. The upstairs bar evokes a confident granduer, beautifully understated.
Downstairs it gets wilder - with horizontal black and white lines, banquets all the way around, a dj booth that's presently at the end of the bar [though they did say its moving], and a very good soundsystem. The downstairs is a bold graphic experiment that makes the slender room [quite like the old Blue Note Hoxton Square space] into a funky graphic den of inquity designed for maximum impact. The barstaff and serving staff - even though it was very early days - were already finding a rhythm and were obviously really enjoying themselves and the huge Wallpaper* crowd. Lots of London faces - including £50 million pound skull man Damien Hirst - appreciated the creations [one of Ibiza's most famous residents Smokin' Jo & I had a lovely fruity concoctions; whilst Infamous Red Light / nude promoter Terry Hart tucked into vintage bubbly; The Horror's Farris went off piste with the music and all went along for the wild ride - as did Audiosushi's main man Disastronaut who played a set that spanned Sheffield electro, rare New York hiphop, german techno and a series of new bootlegs he'd just made for Fashion week - including new mixes of Suioxsee Souix, joy division and The Cramps - all updates to 2007 standards.... Lots of old friends and new - all stumbling out into the dawn after -
Verdict: 5 stars

Audiosushi DJs at Playboy UK Launch
Audiosushi DJs play the UK Launch of Playboy alongside DJs Dimitri from Paris, Seb Chew from YOYO, Farris from the Horrors, Wade from Stunners International. Audiosushi Djs are featured at this week's Playboy UK Launch at Sketch in association with My Beautiful City. Jeffrey Disastronaut from Audiosushi is playing the final set in the main room following Dimitri from Paris.

1 December, 2007 : Gig Preview: Audiosushi.net presents Peter Hook [Joy Division/New Order] + many more...
Bassist from Joy Division & New Order Peter Hook travels south to headline Audiosushi''s eponymous Audiosushi in Brixton recently called "one of the coolest clubnights on the planet."

Audiosushi Launches PartyPod - iPod DJ Mixes for Every Occasion

Audiosushi, London's leading music stylists, launch "PartyPod". DJs from some of the city's hottest clubs (Sketch, Fabric and Bungalow 8) create the perfect playlists for any event, whatever the occasion, anywhere in the world.

London, England (PRWEB) September 18, 2007 -- Audiosushi, London's leading music stylists, launch "PartyPod". DJs from some of the city's hottest clubs (Sketch, Fabric and Bungalow 8) create the perfect playlists for any event, whatever the occasion, anywhere in the world.
News Image
What: Audiosushi "PartyPod"
When: from now
Why: At the villa, poolside, during cocktails, dinner and parties - you need music
What you get: International caliber DJ Sets
How: Audiosushi gets to know you and your music tastes then designs music for your every mood, occasion and event.

Audiosushi can create a Balearic mix for the poolside, an up-tempo funky mix for late nights and early mornings, complete chill-out for cocktails and dinner - whatever the brief, they can set the mood. The PartyPod is an ultra-cool way to get the very latest music or revisit old favourites - a completely bespoke selection that is sure to become a "desert island disc".

For those money-is-no-object events when only the best will do, Audiosushi will delve into their little black book and arrange for the coolest international DJs or bands to create a mix that will rock your event. Some of the artist they work with include Mylo and this year's Mercury Music Prize winners, the Klaxtons.

How does it work? DJ sets are custom made to be played everywhere from the living room, yacht, villa, and plane or at the poolside. Clients undergo an in-depth music consultation which creates a unique music profile. This in turn guides one of Audiosushi's music experts to design a customized soundtrack. For non UK residents, music can be delivered on CD. With a vast selection of music at their fingertips and 25 years experience in the music industry, the Audiosushi team take the tedium out of downloading and ensure every party's a hit. Prices start from £250.
