Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

From Hockney to Hirst, art is in the proverbial air. The big names are out in force but don’t miss Pakpoom Silaphan’s junkyard neo-pop creations or NoBrow’s prints at The Hayward. In fact, why not go all out and sashay through the London Art Fair in a haze of cultural saturation. Then, after shimmying in your 20s attire at Adam Street or going retro with some flambĂ© action at The Drift, rest your weary head at Dean Street Townhouse’s Soho sleepover. Sweet dreams.

TODAY
London Art Fair

This annual art fair has become a stalwart in our cultural calendar. Bringing together the best of modern British art – major figures such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, and LS Lowry – leading contemporary artists and emerging talent, it’s the perfect place to soak up the art vibe. The justly hyped Art Projects section is the place to be – mingle with the dealers and practise your studied, contemplative look.

Tickets £11 in advance, £16 on the door.

FRIDAY

EAT: Dabbous
Be fashionably early for once and head to the opening night of highly anticipated restaurant Dabbous. As the love-child of Ollie Dabbous (previously of Michelin-starred Texture) and mixologist Oskar Kinberg (of Cuckoo Club) you’ll want to get in there quick. They’ll be serving Mod-European “elegant yet restrained” cuisine in similarly minimal surroundings – think exposed brickwork and metal – from the first-floor restaurant, while the basement bar offers quirky cocktails. We’ll go for Unnamed #1, please.

Time: 12pm – 11.30pm
Place: 39 Whitfield Street, W1T 2SF
Cost: Average price per head £45
Info: Dabbous

PARTY: The Drift Bar
Since the release of The Iron Lady, bars have gone all retro, harking back to the days of big hair and shoulder pads. Stepping back in a blaze of glory, Drift Bar has launched a sizzling menu of flambĂ© favourites: Beef Stroganoff, Steak Diane and Scampi Mornay followed by CrĂŞpe Suzette or Banana FlambĂ©. Dishes are prepared at your table alongside specially paired cocktails, including the Blood Orange Blazer (yes there’s fire involved!). That’s one way to brighten up the dreary January nights.

Time: Various opening times
Place: Heron Tower, 110 Bishopsgate, EC2N 4AY
Cost: FlambĂ© menu £27.95
Info: The Drift Bar

LAST CHANCE
Pakpoom Silaphan’s Remastering the Master

Few would consider old-school Thai adverts art, but somehow Pakpoom Silaphan pulls it off. His street-inspired neo-pop creations take vintage advertising signs as their backdrop, creating a quirky setting for the suitably iconic figures he depicts. The subjects of his current exhibition at Scream are artists – think Frida Kahlo, Salvador DalĂ and Andy Warhol penned onto Coca Cola bottles. Catch it before it ends this Sunday.

Think early Chanel and The Great Gatsby for Die Freche Muse’s latest event, a 1920s Berlin speakeasy. Held in member’s club Adam Street, the private world of exotic dancers and golden-age jazz will offer an experience which is part-high end bordello, part-speakeasy. It’s all rather sophisticated darling so don your flapper dress or dickie bow for a night of hedonistic delights. Book or RSVP here

Cost: £50 (subject to availability)

PODCAST
Pick Me Up Mix

Lil Wayne ft. Tyler the Creator kick off this week’s podcast with sweary, dirty, "alien-obsessed" hip hop (no surprise, considering Tyler’s Yonkers video), followed by a short lull – electronic soul and laid-back synthy electronica from the likes of M38. Then Jeffrey brings the beat back up to finish with some African disco followed by banging, bassy club tracks. Perfect PM pick-me-up tunes for rainy office confinement.
