When we’re not hosting events or coming up with new food concepts, we like to spend our time hanging in east London: the mix of cultures, styles, pubs, clubs, bars and food venues makes for a fun place to be at the weekend.

The Rebel Dining Society, founded by Shay Ola with his DJ partner and friend Charlie Purdie, turned what was a small pop-up into one of east London’s most talked-about dining events. As part of the Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series they have been working closely with Bombay Sapphire to co-curate an evening on 18 August which will feature a travel-themed edible interactive experience. See below for more information and good luck on securing a place to join us!

FILM: Project Nim
We’ve been eagerly reading the glowing U.S. reviews of James Marsh’s new documentary (he would be the Brit director who won an Oscar for Man on Wire), and a month later, it is finally hitting UK screens. The film tells the sad story of a chimp raised as a human child in the ‘70s, taught sign language, and finally sold to a lab. Due to summer blockbuster season, though, it’s not easy to track down a screening.

Time: 4.15pm & 9pm
Place: Rio Dalston, 107 Kingsland High Street, E8 2PB
Cost: £9
Info: Project Nim

FOOD: N-Ice
Promising Benares-quality food from frozen ingredients and made by trainee chefs is a tall order, but we’re trusting in Atul Kochhar’s involvement in this week-long pop-up. Signature Kochhar dishes, like crisp fried spicy John Dory with grokha chutney and Kashmiri lamb curry will be served up at a fraction of the usual price, alongside other gourmet dishes like Petit Pois ice cream, smoked duck and crab dumplings.

Time: 12-2pm
Place: Vincent Rooms, Westminster Kingsway College, 76 Vincent Square, SW1P
Cost: £10 food, £10 for a bottle of wine
Info: N-Ice

The Rebel Dining Society's Shop Recommendation
Supernice

There is a wicked interiors shop on Columbia Road called Supernice and we are totally into their Sock Monkey wall stickers. It’s worth a stop if you’re in the area on a Sunday for the flower market – they also do all kinds of wall graphics by Threadless and other designers, as well as plates, cushions and wallpaper silhouettes.

Regents Canal

Regents Canal is a cool place to unwind, being in the centre of London yet so close to nature and tranquility is pretty unique.

MUSIC: Matthew Herbert Big Band
There’s nothing Matthew Herbert doesn’t do well, from recording crisps crunching and turning it into electro to remixing tracks for Björk – and that includes putting together Big Bands for movie soundtracks, and then touring with them. We love Ronnie Scott’s anyway, with its central Soho location, classic cocktails and two varieties of caviar to choose from, so we won’t take much persuading to make an appearance here.

Time: 7.30pm
Place: Ronnie Scott’s, 47 Frith St,
W1D 4HT
Cost: £25-48.50

CLUB: Thunder
You could go crazy trying to keep up to date with every new dance party in Dalston, but those in the know tell us that this Chicago- and Detroit-inspired underground house night is something fresh. Sure, Visions is hip in a slightly shabby style, but with guest DJ Neville Watson jetting over from gigs in Berlin and Munich, the arty east Londoners in attendance won’t be noticing the sticky floors.

Time: 10pm-5am
Place: 588 Kingsland Rd, E8 4AH
Cost: £4-7

Nomad Cinema: Cinema Paradiso
Sponsored Listing

Pure escapism is what we’re in need of right now, so we’re putting our names down for this screening of the Italian classic. A glass of sparkling wine, a balmy evening, a nostalgic story about a young boy’s love for cinema in pre-television era Sicily: sounds like the perfect end to a weekend. Take a stroll around Holland Park’s stunning Kyoto Garden and have afternoon tea in the Orangery first.

ART: Ron Arad’s Curtain Call
There are plenty of reasons to be in this neck of the woods on a Sunday afternoon: Primrose Hill cafés, the boating lake in Regent’s Park, and now, to take a look at this interactive installation by the Tel Aviv-born architect and designer. It’s a circular curtain made up of 5,600 silicon rods, on which videos and art by the likes of Mat Collishaw and Hussein Chalayan are projected, and they shift as the curtain moves.

Time: 10am-7pm
Place: Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8EH
Cost: Pay as you wish

DRINK: The Shop NW10
Kensal Rise already has the arty Lexi cinema, lovely café Gracelands and, in The Paradise, a decent gastro pub – now it’s moving out of yummy mummy territory and into a real destination spot with the launch of stylishly retro bar The Shop, where you can drink Bloody Marys from vintage milk bottles, served alongside miniature jam jars of your spirit of choice. Overhead 1950s lights once hung at Manchester Airport, and bar stools were made from WWII crates. We like.

Time: 12-11pm
Place: 75 Chamberlayne Road, NW10 3ND
Cost: Cocktails £3-9
